RPC suffers first-half loss
RPC, a pan-European producer of various small plastics packagings, including UN-approved pails and jerrycans, has announced a first-half post-tax loss of £3.1m compared to a post-tax profit of £2.4m 12 months ago, despite seeing its revenues rise from £329.7m to £381.0m over the same period. "RPC achieved a creditable first half performance in what can only be described as very difficult market circumstances with the combination of input prices rising to record levels and a slowing economy," says chairman Jamie Pike. "Looking forward, margins are expected to recover with selling price increases taking effect and polymer prices easing." In line with its strategic review announced this past June, RPC will now focus its efforts on those packaging sectors where it has a strong market position and good long term prospects, with the company having earmarked eight plants for subsequent sale or closure.
